Bangkok: Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, Speaker of the National Assembly and Speaker of the House of Representatives, has expressed deep concern about the severe flooding affecting southern Thailand and has instructed the Prachachat Party team to provide urgent assistance to those impacted. He extended his gratitude to the government and related agencies for their swift response in addressing the crisis.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor, speaking from Qatar during an official mission, highlighted that the current year’s flooding crisis is the result of multiple storms, leading to more severe conditions than experienced last year, particularly in Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province, and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. He indicated that the water levels in the southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat are expected to rise due to the risk of the Sai Buri and Pattani rivers overflowing, should heavy rainfall persist. This situation raises concerns about potential flooding comparable to previous years.
As a legislator, Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor expressed his care for the affected residents and acknowledged the prompt mobilization by the government, House of Representatives members, and relevant agencies to aid the people more rapidly than in the past. He remains particularly worried about those whose homes have been inundated and who require urgent shelter from government services.
Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor stressed the importance of accelerating relief efforts once floodwaters recede, to address damage to farms, homes, and public infrastructure, enabling disaster victims to resume their normal lives swiftly. He also reported on the Thai delegation from the Prachachat Party, who were in Qatar before the heavy rains struck the South, noting that local teams had been instructed to provide immediate on-ground assistance, including distributing food, water, and establishing field kitchens to mitigate initial hardships.
The Prachachat Party members currently in Qatar are set to return to Thailand promptly after their mission concludes, to support the ongoing relief efforts. Their teams and MPs in the affected provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat are committed to delivering continuous assistance to manage the flood crisis effectively.
