Wat Chedi (Ai Khai) Renowned for Promising Good Fortune, Attracts Devotees Seeking Luck

Nakhon si thammarat: Wat Chedi (Ai Khai) in Sichon District, celebrated for its sacredness and the belief that wishes made here come true, continues to draw visitors from across the southern region of Thailand and beyond. This revered site is home to a carved wooden figure of a boy, aged about 9-10 years, believed to harbor a holy spirit. This figure is a central attraction for locals and international visitors, seeking blessings, especially in luck and trade.

According to Thai News Agency, Wat Chedi shares similarities with other temples in Thailand but stands out due to its association with Ai Khai. Legend has it that the temple was once the site of Luang Pu Thuat, a well-known southern Buddhist monk, who discovered treasures there. Ai Khai, believed to be a child spirit and a disciple of Luang Pu Thuat, was entrusted with guarding these treasures. This narrative has bestowed an aura of mystery and reverence to the temple, drawing people who believe in the power of Ai Khai to grant their desires.

The history of Wat Chedi includes a period of desertion lasting approximately 1,000 years, until its renovation in 1957. Local lore suggests that anyone who stayed on the temple grounds without acknowledging Ai Khai would face restless nights, disturbed by mysterious phenomena. The name “Ai Khai” emerged when Father Thiang, having seen a vision of the child spirit, was inspired to carve the wooden statue around 1980-1981. This statue, now clothed in camouflage and adorned with sunglasses, is a focal point for offerings and prayers.

Visitors to Wat Chedi are greeted by numerous fighting cock statues and remnants of firecrackers, offerings made to honor Ai Khai. These tokens symbolize the deep faith in Ai Khai’s power to grant wishes related to good fortune, protection, and success in various endeavors, including gambling and trade. The temple is surrounded by items brought by devotees to fulfill vows, further illustrating the widespread belief in Ai Khai’s influence.

Wat Chedi (Ai Khai) has also been recognized as one of the TOP 5 best awards in the Thailand Top Vote 2025, in the category of best tourist attractions of the year, highlighting its significance as a cultural and spiritual destination.
