3rd Army Region Expedites Flood Barrier Reinforcement Along Sai River

Bangkok: The 3rd Army Region is rapidly advancing efforts to reinforce flood barriers along the Sai River, with more than 80% of the project already completed. This initiative aims to prevent potential flooding that could impact both economic areas and residential properties during the rainy season.

According to Thai News Agency, the Royal Thai Army, through its 3rd Army Area, has mobilized personnel and equipment to enhance and repair both temporary and semi-permanent flood barriers along the Mae Sai River in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province. This effort commenced on May 15th, following the devastating floods and landslides in September 2024, which resulted in significant damage to homes. While the Royal Thai Army Engineering Department is set to construct semi-permanent flood barriers in 2025, the existing temporary barriers made of large plastic sandbags, known as Big Bags, are showing signs of wear. Additionally, the construction of permanent concrete walls along the riverbank on the neighboring country's side is raising concerns about increased water pressure, which could potentially erode and collapse the current barriers during major floods.

The 3rd Army Area is working closely with local agencies, deploying 60 personnel and 20 pieces of equipment to work across 13 strategic points from the Huafai community to the Mailungkhon community, covering a total distance of 1,189 meters. Progress on the project is currently at 80.74 percent, with completion expected by June 28th after 45 days of operation.
