Korat: "Dr. Ae," a prominent activist, has raised concerns about a recent incident involving a crane collapse onto a train in Korat, highlighting what he describes as repeated negligence and expressing skepticism about accountability. He emphasized the need for the election of "Thailand New Generation" to introduce a public safety law, establish a central organization for comprehensive solutions, and initiate civil and criminal lawsuits to prevent future occurrences.
According to Thai News Agency, Suchatvee Suwansawat, the prime ministerial candidate and leader of the Thai Kao Mai Party, commented on the crane accident, which took place in Sikhiu District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. He described the incident as shameful and unacceptable, noting that it mirrors previous incidents involving construction cranes for railways and bridges. Suchatvee expressed hope that there were no casualties in the recent collapse.
The recurring crane collapses are attributed to a lack of public safety laws and ineffective accountability mechanisms. Currently, responsible agencies are tasked with investigating such incidents but have been criticized for failing to reveal the truth or punish those responsible, leading to repeated occurrences. Suchatvee and the Thai New Progress Party advocate for the implementation of a public safety law, which includes a clear disaster management policy. They call for adequate representation in parliament to enforce these laws, ensuring that responsible parties face both civil and criminal consequences.
Suchatvee emphasized the necessity of identifying negligence and holding parties accountable to prevent similar disasters. He cited the delayed fault identification in the Office of the Auditor General of Thailand building collapse as an example of systemic issues. He highlighted the importance of public tolerance and the consequences of inaction, stating that natural disasters are compounded by negligence and irresponsibility. Suchatvee, an engineer and party leader, finds the Sikhiu incident unacceptable and calls for legislative action to address negligence and prevent businesses from escaping punishment.
He further criticized the lack of consequences for individuals like "Ken," who, he argues, are emboldened by the absence of accountability. In contrast, developed countries have independent agencies that ensure impartial investigations and accountability. Suchatvee advocates for a public safety law with a neutral party overseeing the process, free from vested interests. This law would allow direct submission of case files for prosecution, deterring future incidents through severe penalties.
Suchatvee urged support for the Thai Kao Mai Party, number 49, to enact the public safety law, warning that without it, similar incidents could recur, posing constant threats to public safety. He highlighted the vulnerability of individuals traveling by train or car, stressing the need for vigilance and legal protection.
