New york: American Airlines has confirmed that it has no interest in a merger with United Airlines and that no such negotiations have taken place. This denial diminishes the chances of a major, industry-shaking deal, as it could face intense scrutiny from various regulatory bodies. According to Thai News Agency, if the two largest airlines in the U.S. network were to merge, it would be the largest merger in over a decade and would further concentrate the domestic aviation market, currently dominated by four roughly equal-sized players. When international flights are included, United Airlines and American Airlines would be the two largest airlines in the world in terms of passenger capacity by 2025. Analysts and aviation industry officials comment that such a large-scale business would face intense scrutiny from regulators, unions, and consumer groups concerned about potentially higher ticket prices and reduced competition, making the deal highly unlikely to be approved. Furthermore, both American Airlines a nd United Airlines have significant overlapping routes, including major hubs at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and key aviation centers in Texas. American Airlines stated that while overall changes in the aviation market might necessitate the merger, it would negatively impact competition and consumers. They also added that the deal is inconsistent with the antitrust enforcement approach of the government under President Donald Trump. Previously, it was reported that Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, presented the idea of a possible merger during a meeting with President Trump in late February. Kirby attempted to convince government officials that a merger would create a stronger, more competitive airline in the global market, aligning with the government's policy of addressing the U.S. trade deficit worldwide.
