Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has confirmed plans to amend firearm laws, aiming to increase penalties for carrying firearms. This move underscores the importance of village headmen and community leaders in identifying and addressing the root causes of issues within their communities.
According to Thai News Agency, the announcement was made during an award ceremony honoring outstanding village headmen and sub-district headmen for the year 2026. A total of 264 individuals were recognized for their exceptional service, coinciding with the 134th anniversary of Village Headmen and Sub-district Headmen Day on August 10. The event also included a tribute to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, followed by a presentation on the history and role of these community leaders.
During the ceremony, Anutin presented awards to 10 outstanding leaders and stressed their critical role in bridging the gap between the government and local communities. He highlighted the need for community leaders to understand and address the root causes of various problems, including social issues, crime, and natural disasters, to prevent escalation and loss.
Anutin urged leaders to be proactive in recognizing and solving issues, emphasizing that a good village headman is one who is aware of and actively participates in resolving community problems. He called on these leaders to uphold principles of good governance, transparency, and fairness, to build trust and strengthen communities.
Addressing a recent tragic incident in Nonthaburi province, Anutin expressed his condolences and emphasized the need to prevent such occurrences in the future. He stated that there is no justification for citizens to carry firearms and highlighted the government's commitment to amending laws to increase penalties for firearm possession, prohibiting both citizens and officials from carrying firearms in public.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for a stringent crackdown on drug trafficking, urging full cooperation from all sectors to restore safety and security in Thailand. This comprehensive approach aims to build stronger, safer, and more livable communities across the nation.
