Bangkok Implements Stringent Measures to Address Birth Registration Fraud

Bangkok:The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is intensifying measures to tackle fraudulent birth registrations by enhancing procedures and staff management. This action is part of a broader effort to resolve the "adoptive father" issue that has plagued the city.

According to Thai News Agency, Bangkok Governor Chatchart Sittipunt disclosed findings from an investigation on October 27, 2026, which revealed about 40 cases of fraudulent birth registrations involving fake father identities. These incidents, occurring from 2017 to 2020, continue to impact current processes. The same individuals previously arrested are implicated in these cases.

Governor Chatchart emphasized the role of the BMA in processing birth registrations through district offices. To address the issue, the BMA has enhanced its verification process, ensuring comprehensive checks on details such as the father's marital history and other suspicious activities. The administration is committed to following the Department of Provincial Administration's guidelines and taking strict action against any officials found involved in corruption.

The Ministry of Interior's guideline mandates that parents must personally register births, rather than delegating the task to hospitals or other individuals. Bangkok is prepared to adhere to this guideline, particularly for cases involving foreign nationals, where security concerns necessitate thorough verification to prevent corruption.

To further improve transparency and reduce corruption risks, Governor Chatchart stated that the BMA has implemented a staff rotation policy. Staff members who have been in the same district office for 3-4 years will be rotated to other offices, minimizing familiarity with the area and enhancing operational efficiency in public service delivery.
