Belgium’s Last-Minute Victory Propels Them to World Cup Round of 16

Seattle: Belgium pulled off a miraculous comeback! Trailing by two goals, they scored a last-minute winner to secure a place in the World Cup Round of 16. The 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match at Seattle Stadium on Wednesday, July 1st, saw "The Red Devils of Europe" Belgium face "The Lions of Teranga" Senegal.

According to Thai News Agency, in the first half, Senegal took the lead 1-0 in the 25th minute through Habib Diarra, who scored from a rebound. In the second half, Senegal continued to play better and extended their lead to 2-0. Ismaila Sarr scored past Thibaut Courtois, the Belgian goalkeeper, in the 51st minute.

The game looked set to be a comfortable victory for Senegal, but Belgium fought back to make it 1-2 through substitute Romelu Lukaku, who scored at the near post in the 86th minute. Three minutes later, Belgium equalized to 2-2 after a defensive error by Senegal, with Youri Tielemans heading the ball into an empty net. After 90 minutes, the score remained 2-2, forcing the match into 30 minutes of extra time.

The game looked set to go to penalties, but in extra time, Belgium were awarded a penalty in the 120+5 minute. Senegal's substitute midfielder, Lamine Camara, fouled Tielemans in the penalty area. Tielemans stepped up and converted the penalty, giving Belgium a 3-2 lead, which they ultimately won. Belgium advanced to the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the match between co-hosts the USA and Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 6th, 2026.
