Bangkok: A section of the ceiling in the parliamentary cafeteria collapsed due to moisture buildup in the air conditioning ducts; however, the main structure has been verified as strong.
According to Thai News Agency, the collapse incident, which occurred on September 13th in the Ginny Cafeteria located on the B2 floor, prompted Mr. Sophon Saram, President of the Parliament and Speaker of the House of Representatives, along with Mr. Siroj Paetphan, Secretary-General of the House of Representatives, to conduct a safety inspection. They were joined by executives from the Secretariat of the Parliament and engineers from the Department of Public Works and Town Planning.
The inspection revealed that the gypsum board ceiling panels fell due to moisture from temperature fluctuations in the air conditioning system. Despite the collapse, engineers confirmed that the main structure was unaffected. To prevent future incidents, repairs are being expedited with the installation of larger screws to enhance the structural integrity of the ceiling.
Mr. Prathan Sophon expressed concern regarding the safety of the cafeteria and has ensured that the repair work will be carried out promptly to address the issue. The Department of Public Works has stated that the primary structural framework of the building remains robust, attributing the ceiling panel collapse solely to condensation from the air conditioning system.
