Bangkok: Chatchart Sittipunt is preparing to submit his resignation as Bangkok Governor this week, with plans to run for another term. He will unveil his new administrative team on May 28th.
According to Thai News Agency, during a press conference on the progress of the Bangkok Comprehensive Plan (4th revision) at Bangkok City Hall, Deputy Governor Wisanu Trapsompol took over in place of Governor Chatchart Sittipunt. Reporters questioned Chatchart's absence, speculating it might be related to his impending resignation. Mr. Wisanu explained that the Governor has numerous responsibilities to fulfill.
When asked if he would work with the same team should Chatchart return as Governor, Mr. Wisanu stated that he could not provide an answer at this time. He emphasized the need to wait for Chatchart to formally announce his candidacy, while affirming that current policies would continue.
Further reports suggest that Chatchart intends to submit his resignation to the Ministry of Interior within the week to pursue re-election. After resigning, he is expected to travel to the United States to celebrate his son's graduation before returning to Thailand to register for the election and present his team of deputy governors and staff on May 28th.
Chatchart's resignation would lead to the entire political leadership of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration stepping down. During the interim period between the gubernatorial election and the installation of a new governor and executive team, the BMA Permanent Secretary, as the highest-ranking civil servant, will act as caretaker and oversee the administration of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration.
