Bangkok: The government is taking a proactive approach to labor policy, aiming to improve the quality of life for Thai workers in all aspects, in preparation for the modern world of work. Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongslueykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, revealed that the government, through the Ministry of Labour, is systematically driving policies to enhance the quality of life for Thai workers while adapting to changes in the global economy and modern employment patterns.
According to Thai News Agency, this initiative follows the welcoming of senior executives from the International Labour Organization (ILO) by Labour Minister Chulaphan Amornvivat to discuss labor and social cooperation between Thailand and other nations. The discussion underscores the Ministry of Labour's active role in elevating Thai labor standards to an international level, with a focus on labor skills development, protecting informal workers, platform workers, and preparing the workforce for the green economy.
Under the Decent Work Cooperation Framework Phase 2 (2023-2027), Thailand and the ILO share a common goal of creating opportunities for access to decent work, reducing inequality, and improving the quality of life for all workers through three key pillars: Future, Access, and Connect. This framework aims to establish a labor system that addresses both economic needs and the well-being of the people.
The Ministry of Labour is also accelerating efforts to update labor laws and protection mechanisms to keep pace with the digital economy. This is especially pertinent for platform and informal workers, to increase social security and job security comprehensively, in line with the rapidly changing global labor market trends.
Thailand is preparing to host the 29th ASEAN Labour Ministers' Meeting (ALMM) this August under the theme "Advancing ASEAN Human Capital: Skills Certification towards Global Recognition." The meeting aims to promote ASEAN labor skills certification to an international level and enhance the competitiveness of Thai workers globally.
Furthermore, cooperation with the ILO extends to labor rights, skills development for future industries, promoting the role of women in STEM fields, protecting migrant workers, and driving the green economy. These efforts are linked to the long-term goal of improving the quality of life and economic security for the Thai people.
This initiative reflects the government's proactive stance on upgrading Thai labor standards to align with the modern world, while creating "decent jobs" and tangibly improving the quality of life for all workers through cooperation at both national and international levels.
