Claims About Muscle Support Tape’s Benefits Debunked by Experts

Bangkok:Six benefits of muscle support tape, widely shared on social media, have been proven false. These claims range from the tape’s ability to strengthen muscles to its supposed role in promoting rapid injury healing.

According to Thai News Agency, the "Verify Before Sharing" center has verified these claims with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Theerapat Laddawong, a physical therapist from the Department of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, Thammasat University. The center's conclusion is that the information is false and should not be shared.

Muscle support tape, a type of elastic tape used in medicine and sports medicine, is made of cotton with an adhesive backing. It is intended to provide some support to muscles and joints. However, the six claims made about its benefits have been thoroughly analyzed and debunked by experts.

The first claim that the tape strengthens muscles is false, as muscles strengthen through exercise and repeated contractions, which the tape alone cannot facilitate. The second claim regarding different medicinal properties based on the color of the tape is also false; the tape is merely fabric and adhesive. Other claims, such as the tape providing the same benefits regardless of application method, being an alternative to joint splinting, offering immediate injury relief, and being essential for athletes, were also proven false or misleading.

Experts advise that the tape's real benefits include supporting joint stability and enhancing proprioception. Users are cautioned to avoid excessive tension when applying the tape and to be aware of potential allergic reactions. Consultation with a specialist is recommended for optimal use.

The "Verify Before Sharing" center emphasizes the importance of understanding the correct benefits and consulting professionals to prevent unnecessary risks associated with muscle support tape.
