Bangkok: Uruguay has appointed former national team striker Diego Forl¡n as the head coach of their senior national team, with a contract that runs until 2027. Forl¡n will also oversee the youth national teams during his tenure.
According to Thai News Agency, the appointment comes after the Uruguayan Football Association decided to part ways with Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa. This decision followed Uruguay's disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup, where the team failed to advance past the group stage, leaving the tournament without a victory.
Diego Forl¡n, aged 47, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having played 112 matches and scored 36 goals for the Uruguayan national team. His coaching career includes stints at Uruguayan clubs Pe±arol in 2020 and Atenas in 2021, where he began to build his credentials in management.
