Bangkok: The Electrical and Electronics Institute (EEI) commemorated its 28th anniversary with the inauguration of "Testing Laboratory Building 8," a facility aimed at enhancing Thailand's infrastructure for advanced testing. This development is set to bolster the Thai industry's transition towards a digital and green economy.
According to Thai News Agency, the EEI was established by a Cabinet resolution on July 7, 1998, and operates under the Ministry of Industry's Industrial Development Foundation. For nearly three decades, the institute has been dedicated to promoting standardization, technology development, and innovation within Thailand's electrical and electronics sector. Since the transfer of testing laboratories from the Thai Industrial Standards Institute in 1999, EEI has expanded its services to include testing, calibration, factory inspection, and product certification. It holds accreditation under the ISO/IEC 17000 series and functions as an inspection and certification body for key regulatory agencies within Thailand.
The EEI is registered as an accredited body in the IECEE CB Scheme, ensuring its testing results are internationally recognized. This accreditation covers areas such as electrical appliances, lighting products, and electromagnetic compatibility standards. The international recognition of its testing facilities helps reduce trade barriers and facilitates the export of Thai-manufactured products. The institute also maintains a comprehensive database of the electrical and electronics industry, which aids in forming strategies and recommendations, as well as supporting early warning systems for the industry. It provides training and consulting services, and offers tax incentives under various government initiatives to boost productivity and competitiveness.
Mr. Narat Rujirat, Director of the EEI, stated that the opening of "Testing Laboratory Building 8" is a pivotal moment for the institute, enabling support for testing new technologies such as fiber optic cables, refrigerants, recycled materials, and clean energy products. The EEI aims to upgrade the high-value electronics and digital industries by examining the Industry Roadmap and recommending development strategies for Thailand's semiconductor and photonics sectors. This includes developing a skilled workforce, establishing occupational standards, and expanding digital and cybersecurity testing services to accommodate smart products and AI technology.
The institute is also committed to transitioning to a green industry, focusing on clean energy products like electric vehicles, chargers, solar panels, and electric motorcycles. It is involved in the Thailand Triangular Cooperation for Carbon Neutrality Capacity-Building in the Electrical and Electronics Industry in ASEAN project, supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, the EEI plans to establish a Green Industry Center, providing services from personnel training to carbon footprint verification, to help Thai businesses meet international environmental standards.
