Lampang: A two-year-old child has died after being hit by a car driven by a former assistant village headman, sending her and her mother flying. The driver claims to have a pre-existing medical condition and denied driving under the influence of alcohol.
According to Thai News Agency, the tragic accident occurred on the Lampang-Ngao road, in front of a tire shop in Ban Pong Wang, Pichai Subdistrict, Mueang Lampang District. CCTV footage revealed that the family-father, mother, and child-was walking hand-in-hand toward their parked car when a speeding black pickup truck struck a white sedan parked on the roadside. The impact propelled the sedan into the mother and her 2-year-old son, launching them into the air. The father narrowly escaped injury.
Despite paramedics' efforts to perform CPR and rush 2-year-old Temfan to the hospital, reports confirmed that he passed away at approximately 2:00 AM. His mother is recovering from a double fracture in her left leg and is awaiting two surgeries at the hospital.
The driver, Mr. Dech, 57, sustained a head injury. Initially, reports suggested he admitted to drinking alcohol before driving. However, during police questioning, Mr. Dech expressed regret for the incident, stating he did not intend harm and denied alcohol consumption, attributing the accident to a pre-existing medical condition.
Lampang City Police are currently awaiting blood test results to determine the presence of alcohol before filing charges. Preliminary charges include negligent driving causing death and property damage. The victim's relatives have filed a police report seeking justice. Temfan's father is now in the process of arranging his son's funeral rites.
