France Imposes Alcohol Ban in Response to Escalating Heatwave

Paris: France has enacted a prohibition on alcohol consumption in public spaces, targeting regions grappling with severe heatwaves and drought conditions. This government directive aims to mitigate health risks and prevent excessive strain on medical personnel during emergencies.

According to Thai News Agency, the directive was announced by the office of Chancellor S©bastien Lecornu and affects 35 of the 96 cantons nationwide that have been designated as red alert regions. This includes Paris, where the popular Fªte de la Musique is traditionally celebrated on the summer solstice. The alcohol ban will commence at noon on Sunday, requiring local governors to enforce laws that prohibit alcohol consumption in all public areas. Additionally, the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages will be banned at all events and performances organized by government entities and their affiliates.

The decision comes in response to a severe heatwave sweeping across France, with the French National Meteorological Institute forecasting temperatures of 39-40 degrees Celsius over the weekend, potentially reaching 41-42 degrees Celsius in some areas-the highest recorded for this period. The heatwave is affecting over three-quarters of the French population, leading to disruptions in public transport services, particularly trains, and the closure of numerous educational institutions.
