Bangkok: The government is accelerating efforts to solve the flooding problem using the "Bang Rakam Model," ordering the Department of Highways to open drainage channels and raise bridge elevations. According to Thai News Agency, the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul, is moving forward with concrete measures to address flooding and drought issues in the "Bang Rakam Model" area of Phitsanulok Province. The government has tasked Deputy Minister of Transport, Mr. Patarapong Pataraprasit, with visiting the area to monitor problems and gather public suggestions to expedite both short-term and long-term solutions.
The deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office stated that the Prime Minister has instructed all ministers to visit affected areas to listen to public concerns, aiming to bring insights and obstacles back to the Cabinet for consideration and to push for concrete solutions. Bang Rakam District, a critical watershed area in the Yom River basin, faces both flooding during the rainy season and drought during the dry season, which continuously affects the quality of life and livelihoods of its residents.
Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, noted that field surveys identified a major bottleneck at the bridge over the Yom River in Ban Wang Pet, Bang Rakam District. Insufficient openings under the bridge and the river cross-section lead to inefficient drainage during floods. The Department of Highways is expediting the opening of drainage channels to alleviate the problem before this year's flood season. They are also proceeding with studies and designs for elevating the bridge to enhance drainage capacity and provide a sustainable long-term solution to flooding.
Additionally, the Ministry of Transport has instructed the Department of Highways to expedite the design and improvement of new U-turn points and install additional lighting in the area, based on public suggestions, to enhance travel safety and convenience for road users.
"The government prioritizes addressing recurring flooding issues alongside developing transportation infrastructure to ensure public safety, reduce the impact of floods, and improve the quality of life in the long term. We will integrate the work of all relevant agencies to ensure that solutions are implemented effectively and sustainably," Ms. Lalida said.
