Nakhon si thammarat: Mr. Newin Chidchob, president of Buriram United Football Club, has taken to social media to address the controversy surrounding his attire during a ceremony at the Nakhon Si Thammarat City Pillar Shrine. He clarified that his choice of wearing shorts for the occasion was consistent with his tradition of worshipping 'Jatukham Ramathep' for over a decade, emphasizing that respect and faith are demonstrated through actions and belief rather than clothing.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Newin explained that the event was organized by Buriram United Football Club and not as a provincial event. He reiterated his deep respect and belief in Jatukham Ramathep, a sacred object he has worshipped for many years, and one he still wears around his neck.
Mr. Newin detailed that for more than 10 years, the club has made annual trips to Nakhon Si Thammarat to perform rituals and pay homage to Phra Jatukham Ramathep. He highlighted that each year, he leads the team, including players, coaches, and staff, to seek blessings from the sacred entity and to present the championship trophies won by the club as part of the ceremony.
He stressed that the worship ceremony, held annually before the start of the competition season, is not just a personal belief but also a collective expression of respect for sacred entities by all members of the club. The ceremony reminds participants of the promises made to the city shrine and sacred places, particularly those related to their football careers and the club's success.
Mr. Newin proudly stated that since the club began performing the worship ceremony at the City Pillar Shrine, Buriram United has consistently won championships, bringing home at least one trophy each year for fans to admire. The club independently coordinates and funds the ceremony, underscoring that it is a club initiative rather than a provincial or government event.
He articulated that the increasing participation of government officials and other dignitaries over the years is a sign of respect and honor, with the club extending invitations to them as a mark of respect rather than them hosting the event. Even with the attendance of high-profile guests like the Deputy Prime Minister and provincial officials this year, Mr. Newin emphasized that Buriram United was the sole organizer of the ceremony.
Addressing the attire controversy, Mr. Newin affirmed his right to choose comfortable clothing, noting that he has consistently worn a Buriram United club shirt and shorts to the ceremony for over a decade, with no objections from the City Pillar Shrine officials. He maintained that clothing does not determine one's degree of respect or faith, pointing out that his long-standing practice reflects genuine respect and worship from the heart.
In response to critics of his attire, Mr. Newin stated, "I respect everyone's right to their opinion. Unless I'm hosting an event, I wear what I feel comfortable in, as long as it's permitted by the host."
