Bangkok: The government has taken significant steps to alleviate household debt, successfully mediating over 27,000 cases and reducing expenses by more than 3 billion baht. A free debt resolution event is set to be launched in six provinces to further aid citizens.
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that under the leadership of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the government prioritizes tackling household debt issues. This initiative ensures justice and protects citizens' rights by facilitating integrated cooperation between the Ministry of Justice, financial institutions, and relevant agencies. The aim is to provide citizens with fair and accessible debt mediation processes, reducing financial burdens and increasing household liquidity.
The Ministry of Justice, through the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection, in collaboration with the Department of Legal Execution and over 40 financial institutions, has implemented the "Household Debt Resolution and Justice for the People Fair 2026" project. This initiative assists debtors both before and after court judgments, covering various types of debt including credit card, personal loans, auto and motorcycle hire-purchase loans, and student loan debt. Since February, 27,470 individuals have participated in mediation, amounting to over 5,926 million baht in debt, thereby reducing the financial burden by over 3,530 million baht and releasing more than 20,555 guarantors. This reflects successful government and financial institution collaboration in delivering tangible assistance to the public.
Ms. Lalida further stated that the government will continue organizing the "Household Debt Resolution and Justice for the People" fair with six additional events planned for July and August 2026 in Ratchaburi, Phetchaburi, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phuket, Yala, and Pathum Thani provinces. Citizens will have access to debt mediation, legal advice, and justice services free of charge. Interested individuals can register through the Department of Rights and Liberties Protection or the Department of Legal Execution websites, and inquire via the Justice Hotline 1111, pressing 77 or 79, throughout the project period. The government aims to fairly resolve debt issues, reduce expenses, minimize disputes, and create opportunities for citizens to regain financial stability through cooperation and access to convenient, swift, and free justice.
