Grenade Mishap Kills Suspect During Police Operation in Chiang Rai

Chiang rai: A dramatic police operation in Chiang Rai Province took a fatal turn when a man, attempting to attack officers with a grenade, accidentally caused the device to explode, resulting in his immediate death. The incident unfolded at 7:00 AM as drug suppression police and military personnel, operating under a search warrant issued by Fang Provincial Court, surrounded a residence in Moo 9, Huai Chomphu Subdistrict. Their mission was to apprehend 18-year-old Silchai, wanted for selling methamphetamine, a Category 1 narcotic.

According to Thai News Agency, the officers approached the steep, mountainous terrain with caution, prepared for potential resistance. As they neared the house, they encountered a man armed with a shotgun who fired at them. He was also carrying an explosive device, which he attempted to throw at the officers. However, the grenade detonated prematurely, resulting in his death. The explosion left the man's face and head severely damaged, initially preventing authorities from confirming his identity. A police officer sustained injuries from shrapnel and was promptly hospitalized.

Subsequent forensic examination revealed the deceased to be Mr. Veerapan, 44, the father of the suspect, Mr. Silchai, who was not present during the incident. Authorities have intensified their efforts to locate Mr. Silchai, while a background check on Mr. Veerapan uncovered an outstanding arrest warrant related to a previous drug offense. The area remains secured as a thorough investigation is conducted to piece together the events leading to this tragic outcome.
