Varawut Delays Permanent Secretary Appointment Pending Anutin’s Return

Bangkok: Varawut Silpa-archa, Thailand's Minister of Industry, confirmed that the appointment of the new Permanent Secretary of Industry will not be presented to the Cabinet this week. This decision is pending the return of Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul from his overseas mission in Australia and New Zealand.

According to Thai News Agency, Varawut revealed that discussions with the Prime Minister are necessary before moving forward with the appointment. Varawut addressed rumors suggesting that the current Permanent Secretary of Industry might be transferred to the Ministry of Energy. He clarified that the Minister of Energy prefers to promote from within his own ministry. This shift comes as the term for the outgoing Permanent Secretary, Mr. Nattapol Rangsitpol, concludes after a four-year tenure. Varawut mentioned that high-ranking civil servants can extend their terms by one year, twice, if proposed by the Minister and approved by the Cabinet.

Further elaborating on the rumors, Varawut stated the need for consultation with the Prime Minister and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition for the Permanent Secretary. He emphasized that previous attempts to submit the appointment to the Cabinet were withdrawn due to incomplete documentation. Varawut expressed his personal support for Mr. Rangsitpol, praising his capabilities, particularly in automotive and industrial sectors, and indicated openness to his advancement within governmental roles.

Varawut also mentioned his continuous communication with Mr. Rangsitpol since assuming office, highlighting the historical ties between the Ministries of Industry and Energy. This context underscores the continuity in their operations and potential collaboration.

Energy Minister Ekanat Promphan's stance of promoting from within his ministry highlights the complexity of the situation. Varawut reiterated that the appointment of a permanent secretary is a ministerial responsibility and will undergo thorough consideration to select the most suitable candidate. He humorously remarked on the abundance of talent within the Ministry of Industry, indicating that the decision will be made thoughtfully.
