Bangkok: Ice Rakchanok Srinok, a prominent member of parliament from the People's Party, has been honored with the Politician of the Year 2026 award at the 5th The People Awards ceremony. The event, held under the theme "Shine Your Path," recognized her for her significant contributions to political transparency and reform.
According to Thai News Agency, Rakchanok, famously known as "Ice," emerged victorious over eight other strong contenders, including eminent figures such as Anutin Charnvirakul, Chatchart Sittipunt, and Sirikanya Tansakul. Her innovative campaign using bicycles in the Bang Bon district and her fearless investigations into military budgets and governmental corruption were pivotal in her selection for the award.
During her acceptance speech, Ice Rakchanok expressed gratitude to the communities of Bang Bon, Chom Thong, and Nong Khaem for their support. She clarified that her political endeavors aim to foster transparency and reform rather than upheaval. Additionally, she acknowledged the influence of Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit and Piyabutr Saengkanokkul, founders of new political movements, for inspiring young people to engage in community politics and harness social media for societal change.
The 2026 awards ceremony was particularly scrutinized due to past controversies. In 2023, the event faced criticism after awarding "Tawan" and "Bam," political activists involved in legal cases under Article 112. The incident led to a temporary leave of absence for the founder. This year's awards, however, underscore the commitment to spotlight individuals who drive social change, even if their political views are contentious.
