Illegal Timber Processing Gang Uncovered in Huai Kha Khaeng Forest

Uthai thani: A gang illegally processing protected timber in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary has been uncovered, revealing a significant stash of rare wood.

According to Thai News Agency, the operation was discovered by forest protection officers from Unit AN.11, Ban Thung Pho, along with local leaders, following a tip-off about illegal timber activities in the Sai Bua forest, part of the Chet Roi mountain range. The team, led by Mr. Chamrat Kaewkanrai, Mr. Udomsak Menmee, and other local officials, surrounded and searched Mr. Udomsak's residence in Ban Nong Phak Phaeo, where they found large quantities of illegally processed timber.

The officers seized numerous logs of protected rosewood and teak, which were cut into smaller pieces and scattered around the area. They also found a tractor loaded with teak logs, equipment such as modified electric chainsaws, and materials used for drug consumption. More than 20 pieces of processed wood, intended for furniture production, were discovered, with an estimated value of at least 200,000 baht. During the search, three suspects fled the scene on motorcycles upon spotting the authorities.

Officials transported the confiscated timber to a designated storage facility for further investigation. They plan to expedite an inquiry into Mr. Udomsak, as his son, known for timber processing, was previously arrested but released on bail. Villagers claim that Mr. Udomsak's son is protected by influential figures, which has hindered past prosecutions. Reports indicate that the sound of chainsaws is frequently heard at night, and two individuals are known to collect the timber regularly.
