According to Thai News Agency, wildfires have devastated large areas of forest and peatland across Indonesia, particularly affecting Sumatra and Borneo. The resulting haze has been carried by wind currents, leading to transboundary pollution affecting Malaysia and Singapore.
The air quality levels in the region have become hazardous to health, contributing to an increase in respiratory illnesses. As of 300 PM local time, the Swiss air quality monitoring website IQAir reported that Kuala Lumpur ranked as the most polluted major city globally, with an air quality index of 222, indicating a significant health impact.
