JIC Thailand Highlights Ban Nong Chan’s Role in Cambodian Refugee Aid

Bangkok: JIC Thailand has emphasized the historical significance of Ban Nong Chan as a symbol of humanitarian aid provided by Thailand to Cambodian refugees. Air Chief Marshal Praphas Sonjaidee, Director of the Joint Information Center for the Thai-Cambodian Situation (JIC), clarified the claims surrounding Ban Nong Chan, underscoring Thailand's commitment to international law and good relations with Cambodia.

According to Thai News Agency, Ban Nong Chan, located in Sa Kaeo Province, was a key border area that served as a refugee camp for Cambodians affected by the Khmer Rouge era. During the conflict, Thailand opened its borders to accommodate a large influx of refugees and worked with the United Nations and other international bodies to provide essential supplies such as food, medicine, clean water, and temporary shelter.

The efforts to assist refugees placed a significant burden on Thailand, requiring substantial resources for border management, security, and humanitarian support. These measures were vital in ensuring the safety of refugees until they could safely return to Cambodia once conditions improved.

Air Chief Marshal Praphas emphasized that discussions about Ban Nong Chan should consider its historical context, as it represents Thailand's critical role in supporting Cambodian refugees during a challenging period. He reaffirmed Thailand's commitment to upholding humanitarian principles, maintaining good relations with neighboring countries, and adhering to international law and border agreements.

Ban Nong Chan is recognized as an important chapter in history, reflecting Thailand's dedication to providing refuge and assistance to Cambodians in crisis. The Thai-Cambodian Situation Information Center continues to highlight Thailand's adherence to facts and international law in safeguarding national interests and fostering positive international relations.
