Bangkok: Tonight, sky gazers have the opportunity to witness the “Leonid meteor shower,” which is expected to display an average fall rate of 15 meteors per hour. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) announced that the meteor shower will occur from the night of November 17th to the morning of November 18th, 2025. The central point of the meteor shower will be located in the Leo constellation, and it is recommended for observers to begin viewing after midnight.
According to Thai News Agency, the Leonid meteor shower is the result of debris from comet 55P Tempel-Tuttle, which makes its orbit around the Sun every 33 years. As the comet travels, it leaves behind a trail of rocks and dust. Each November, when Earth crosses this path, the gravitational pull of the comet draws these particles into the Earth’s atmosphere, where they burn up and become visible as streaks of light in the sky.
For those planning to view the meteor shower, it is advised to look towards the Leo constellation, which will rise above the horizon at 1:00 AM on November 18th. Observations can continue until dawn. While the peak rate is 15 meteors per hour, the absence of moonlight will enhance visibility. It is suggested to find a location that is free from artificial light to fully enjoy the meteor shower.
