Libong Island: Hundreds of thousands of migratory birds fleeing the Siberian winter have gathered to feed on Dragon's Spine, Libong Island, Kantang District, Trang Province, creating a fascinating spectacle for tourists. More than 100,000 birds, encompassing over 100 species, have arrived from Siberia to escape the cold and find sustenance in the form of small aquatic animals during the period when the sea level is at its lowest.
According to Thai News Agency, Libong Island is renowned as the largest bird-watching area in the country, being designated as a Ramsar site, which is a global wetland area recognized for its abundant food sources and minimal human disturbance. This special status attracts a variety of migratory species, which gather in significant numbers at locations such as Laem Ju Hoi, Hat Tob, and Spine Dragon. Notably, some birds have been observed with leg rings, a result of studies conducted by ornithologists and researchers from various provinces, aiming to understand the birds' lives and flight paths. This research facilitates international cooperation in bird conservation, ensuring that migratory birds remain safe and well-nourished during their extensive journeys.
Tourists continue to flock to Libong Island, Trang Province, to witness the annual event, capitalizing on the opportunity for bird-watching that occurs only once a year. Visitors interested in experiencing this natural marvel can arrange long-tailed boat tours from Ban Chao Mai Pier or Hat Yao Pier in Trang Province, with service fees ranging from 700 to 1,000 baht per boat, depending on the duration of the tour.
