Bangkok: The Minister of Tourism has stated that the arrest of a Thai Airways flight attendant on charges of drug possession is a personal offense and will not affect Thailand's overseas tourism or its airlines. Mr. Surasak Charoenphanvarakul, the Minister of Tourism and Sports, emphasized that the incident at Suvarnabhumi Airport is an isolated case and does not reflect on the capabilities or integrity of Thai airlines.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Surasak highlighted the importance of more rigorous drug screening for both incoming and outgoing travelers to enhance overall tourist safety. He stressed that maintaining tourist safety requires comprehensive efforts across various agencies to combat drug trafficking effectively. The government, he noted, is committed to building confidence among tourists traveling domestically by implementing stricter safety measures.
Addressing concerns about the potential impact on Thai airlines and tourists traveling abroad, Mr. Surasak clarified that the situation is an individual issue rather than an organizational failing. He assured that the incident would not have any repercussions on the airline industry, although airlines are expected to increase the thoroughness of their crew checking processes.
In light of a previous incident a decade ago, where an airline was banned in Australia, Mr. Surasak reaffirmed that investigations have consistently shown such issues to be personal rather than organizational. Thus, there is no justification for any sanctions at the organizational level against the airline, as there was no evidence of its involvement in any wrongdoing.
