Naypyidaw: The Myanmar military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has emerged victorious in the first phase of the elections, marking a significant development since the February 2021 coup.
According to Thai News Agency, the Union Election Commission released partial results from the elections held on December 28, 2025, covering 56 constituencies. The USDP is leading all parties, as anticipated, despite reports of low voter turnout. The results, disclosed on Friday, revealed that out of 40 seats counted in the national parliament, the USDP, led by retired generals, secured 38 seats. The Shan Democratic Party (White Tiger Party) and the Mon Unity Party each won one seat. In the local parliamentary elections, the USDP claimed 14 out of 15 seats.
The elections have faced criticism from the United Nations, some Western countries, and human rights groups due to the absence of parties opposing the military government and laws preventing criticism of the elections. The Myanmar military government announced on December 31, 2025, that voter turnout was around 52 percent. The International Foundation for Electoral Systems, a US-based nonprofit, reported that voter turnout in the 2015 and 2020 elections reached 70 percent. The remaining phases of the elections are scheduled for January 11 and 25, covering 265 out of 330 cities across the nation, with some cities excluded due to a lack of government control.
