Myanmar-Thailand Border Gate Reopens Amid Trade Restrictions

Myawaddy: The reopening of Myanmar's Myawaddy border gate after a nine-month closure is anticipated to boost border trade, although the recovery is expected to face challenges due to Myanmar's import licensing and foreign exchange regulations, as reported by Thailand's Department of Foreign Trade.

According to Thai News Agency, the checkpoint at the 2nd Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge, opposite Mae Sot in Thailand's Tak province, resumed operations on May 28, 2026. This reopening follows a unilateral closure by Myanmar that began on August 18, 2025. Director-General Arada Fuangthong highlighted that the reopening would facilitate logistics and reduce costs for Thai exporters dealing in consumer goods, construction materials, and industrial products.

Despite the positive outlook, Myanmar's import licensing system remains a significant concern for the latter half of 2026. The system, which ties import approvals to export earnings and the availability of foreign exchange, is known to extend the authorization process considerably.

The Thai-Myanmar trade through Mae Sot experienced a decline from January to April 2026, owing to border disruptions and stringent import controls. Although the checkpoint's reopening is anticipated to rejuvenate trade in essential supplies, the Department of Foreign Trade plans to negotiate a relaxation of these restrictions at a forthcoming Joint Trade Committee meeting later this year.
