Bangkok: Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, a Member of Parliament from the People's Party and leader of the opposition in the House of Representatives, has expressed his views on the recent activities of former Prime Ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, and Yingluck Shinawatra. The trio recently engaged in meetings with ASEAN leaders, a move seen by Nattapong as potentially beneficial if it addresses pressing issues faced by the populace. He emphasized the need for the current Prime Minister to adopt a more proactive approach, especially concerning the critical issue of shrimp exports.
According to Thai News Agency, Nattapong commented on the political implications of the Shinawatra family's meetings, noting that the Prime Minister should be the one to address these inquiries. He raised concerns about the government's slow response to the shrimp export issue with Malaysia, warning that delays could devastate shrimp farmers, as entire ponds could perish within weeks. Nattapong stressed that the Prime Minister should have acted more swiftly to provide solutions to the farmers, reflecting on discussions held during a shadow cabinet meeting.
When questioned about the political ramifications of the former Shinawatra prime ministers' trip, Nattapong stated that such implications are for the people to decide. He remarked that negotiating for the country's benefit, whether by former or current politicians, is positive. However, he underscored the importance of a Prime Minister actively using their power to address issues promptly. He reiterated the opposition's call for accountability in parliament and the necessity for the Prime Minister to participate in live question-and-answer sessions, a fundamental responsibility of officeholders.
Addressing whether the Shinawatra family's movements would impact the government, Nattapong indicated that the effect depends on the public benefit derived from such actions. He noted that if the public gains, there would be no issue. As part of the opposition, he mentioned that any direct questions would likely be directed at the Prime Minister.
Regarding reports of Mr. Thaksin's discussions with the Malaysian Prime Minister about the shrimp issue prior to Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's visit, Nattapong commented that the public desires effective problem-solving through dialogue. While he could not provide details beyond the shrimp exports, he concluded by urging the Prime Minister to act more decisively, in line with the opposition's role to prompt government action.
