Bangkok: Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, leader of the People's Party, has called for the Election Commission (EC) to indict 229 individuals involved in the alleged collusion in the Senate elections. He emphasized that allowing the court to rule on their innocence would be the best way to clear their names of accusations.
According to Thai News Agency, Nattapong expressed that the best birthday gift for Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Bhumjaithai Party would be their stance in demanding the EC's action against those involved in the alleged collusion. He clarified that his demands were not targeting any particular party, but rather aimed at demonstrating citizen strength. Nattapong also commented on Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai's post, which implied that the case would have been resolved if Pheu Thai had been elected, emphasizing the need for a robust system of checks and balances accountable to the public.
Nattapong highlighted the importance of the EC operating with honesty and impartiality, urging them to refer the accused to the Supreme Court. He noted that transparency is crucial, regardless of the EC's decision. Nattapong reiterated that the evidence presented indicates reasonable cause to believe the Senate selection process was rigged, thus urging the EC to send the 229 names to court for a verdict.
Mr. Supachai Jaisamut of the Bhumjaithai Party suggested that the case was an attempt to undermine his party, for which legal action would be pursued against those who leaked information. Nattapong responded by stating that the court is the rightful place to determine innocence or guilt. He encouraged those accused, especially from the Bhumjaithai Party, to demonstrate their readiness to engage in the judicial process.
Nattapong urged citizens to gather and exercise their constitutional rights to demand the EC's honest performance, emphasizing the need to hold accountable those involved in what he described as a major fraud in Thai political history. As the EC was set to make a decision, he called on the public to show their strength and ensure the EC fulfills its duties fairly.
When questioned about the potential lack of indictments, Nattapong stated that the EC would have to take responsibility for their actions.
