ONCB Denies Claims of Methamphetamine Production in Thailand

Bangkok: The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has firmly refuted recent allegations that Thailand serves as a base for methamphetamine production. These assertions surfaced following the apprehension of a drug trafficking network associated with the figure known as "Nu Chen."

According to Thai News Agency, the ONCB has addressed the misinformation circulating on social media and foreign news outlets. Reports, including those from a press conference on June 9th regarding the "Operation Eradicate Drugs" campaign, inaccurately claimed that Thailand is a significant methamphetamine production hub. These reports suggested that chemicals capable of producing over 1.1 billion methamphetamine pills were present in the country, allegedly based on statements from South Korean authorities. The ONCB has clarified that these claims are distorted and misleading.

Thailand's role is primarily as a transit point rather than a production site. The seizure of 50 tons of chemicals, found in 10 warehouses, involved precursors and industrial chemicals intended for export, not drug manufacturing. The operation aimed to prevent these substances from reaching production facilities across the border.

The interception of what could have resulted in 1.1 billion pills, or 700 million doses as calculated by South Korean media, underscores the ONCB's efforts in combating drug trafficking. This figure is part of a damage assessment that highlights the potential impact if these chemicals had reached methamphetamine manufacturing sites. The operation has been recognized as a success, with South Korean media commending the collaborative efforts between the South Korean National Intelligence Service and the Thai Narcotics Suppression Bureau. The exchange of critical intelligence played a key role in the significant seizure. The Thai leadership has expressed gratitude for this effective partnership, demonstrating a strong commitment to tackling transnational drug trafficking.
