Bangkok: Statistics show that over 8 million people used public transportation during the three-day New Year period of 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Transport revealed that from December 30, 2025, to January 1, 2026, a total of 8,267,576 individuals traveled using public transportation, marking a decrease of 3.88% from the same period last year. Rail systems were the most utilized, accounting for 45% of domestic travel. International public transport saw a decrease of 4.6%, with 809,409 travelers.
The Ministry of Transport has prioritized safety, inspecting 47,122 buses and 2,701 vessels, finding minimal defects. The road network experienced 684 accidents, leading to 91 deaths, but these figures represented a decline from the previous year. Efforts to enhance safety involved deploying special trains and additional buses to meet passenger demand and prevent congestion.
At Suvarnabhumi Airport, measures included deploying Airport Ambassadors and increasing passport control efficiency. The Ministry of Transport emphasized the continuous enforcement of safety and efficiency measures for all transport modes to ensure a smooth return to Bangkok post-holiday. Public transportation systems are expected to manage passenger volume effectively, ensuring accessibility and safety across all networks.
