People’s Party MPs Demand Explanation from House Speaker on Plans for Emerald Pool Renovation

Bangkok: People’s Party MPs are gearing up to submit a letter to the Speaker of the House, seeking clarification on the necessity and rationale behind the decision to fill the Emerald Pool. The MPs argue that there are other underutilized areas within the parliament building that could be enhanced without resorting to such measures.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phanthil Nuamchim, an MP from the Prachachon Party, addressed the media concerning the proposed renovations of the Emerald Pool, the library, and the reception room on the first floor, with a budget allocation of 150 million baht. These renovations aim to increase the usable space within the parliament building, which is currently hindered by accessibility issues. Mr. Nuamchim recognized the existing problems but emphasized that solving them should not necessarily require such a significant budget. He highlighted issues like polluted water and safety concerns at the Emerald Pool, suggesting practical solutions such as installing railings and ensuring proper water drainage to prevent mosquito breeding.

He further pointed out that the parliament building, sprawling over 400,000 square meters, has several areas that remain underutilized, including the 10th floor, which could serve public exhibitions. Mr. Nuamchim called for a focus on improving areas like the dining room and stressed that any renovations for commercial purposes should be conducted with transparency and clear criteria to avoid criticism. He advocated for a comprehensive survey of existing spaces to ensure they are fully utilized before committing to costly renovations. Mr. Nuamchim plans to closely monitor the budget usage for parliament renovations and will formally request the President of the House of Representatives to justify the decision to convert the Emerald Pool into a co-working space, rather than addressing its existing issues.
