Phumtham Assures Submarine Purchase Decision by Early June

Bangkok: “Phumtham” has assured that the issue surrounding the purchase of a submarine will be resolved by early June. He is preparing to make a decision by the end of May or the beginning of June, which will then be presented to the Prime Minister and communicated to the public. He emphasized the importance of avoiding any drama that could potentially impact international relations.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Phumtham Vejjayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, discussed the progress of the submarine purchase following his discussions with the German Defense Minister, the Chinese Ambassador, and a representative from Pakistan. These interactions have provided him with the information necessary to make an informed decision. He highlighted the two possible outcomes: not proceeding with the purchase could affect the 8 billion baht budget already spent, whereas moving forward necessitates public understanding of the decision’s benefits to national interests. Mr. Phumtham acknowledged the long-standing expectation from the Chinese government for a decision on this matter.

Mr. Phumtham also noted that the navy’s decision is crucial, and any delay could have implications on budget allocation for the military. He reiterated his commitment to concluding this issue during his tenure and ensuring that the decision is transparent and available for public scrutiny.
