Police Committee Asserts Money Laundering Case Against Former Candidate Remains Open

Bangkok: The Police Committee has stated that the case involving a former Pheu Thai Party parliamentary candidate, linked to money laundering and drug trafficking, remains unresolved. Despite the prosecutor's order of dismissal, police are reportedly preparing a dissenting opinion to present to the Attorney General for a conclusive decision.

According to Thai News Agency, Wacharapong Kuwijitsuwann, Chairman of the House of Representatives' Police Committee, addressed the situation concerning Mr. Boonrit Raorungroj, a former candidate for Bangkok Constituency 33 under the People's Party. Raorungroj is facing charges of money laundering connected to a drug trafficking network, which led to his election disqualification. He is also advocating for Mr. Pawut Pongwitthayaphanu, a People's Party list MP under investigation for potential involvement in a Forex money laundering case, suggesting Raorungroj's possible innocence.

Raorungroj pointed out that the investigation into his case originated from a probe by the Narcotics Suppression Division 2 in December 2015, initially involving ten major drug cases. These investigations uncovered financial ties to 11 suspects, resulting in the collection of evidence, issuance of arrest warrants by the Criminal Court, and seizure of numerous assets.

Investigators from the Narcotics Suppression Division 2 later recommended charges of joint money laundering against all 11 suspects and forwarded the case file to the public prosecutor in March 2026. However, the prosecutor decided not to indict and returned the case file to the Royal Thai Police, advising further action under Section 145/1 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Mr. Wacharapong emphasized that the case is ongoing, as the Royal Thai Police have retrieved the case file and are expected to prepare an objection to the decision not to prosecute. This objection will subsequently be submitted to the Attorney General for a final determination in accordance with legal procedures.
