Bangkok: The Police Chief has publicly acknowledged receiving a reprimand from the Prime Minister concerning his behavior during a recent press conference, where he was seen smoking a cigarette without handcuffs. The Prime Minister has instructed an investigation to determine if this act violated any regulations.
According to Thai News Agency, Police General Kittiratt Phanphet, Commissioner General of the Royal Thai Police, discussed the incident involving Chalong Riangrang, a former Nonthaburi MP and suspect in the fatal shooting of Police Colonel Thongchai Yenprasert. The suspect was photographed smoking during questioning at Rattanathibet Police Station without handcuffs. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for proper police conduct during press conferences, including the use of restraints and prohibiting smoking.
Pol. Gen. Kittirat stated his compliance with the order and has directed Pol. Gen. Itthipol Achariyaprasit, Inspector General of the National Police, to investigate the incident. He expects the findings to be available soon. The regulation regarding such conduct has been longstanding, dating back to Pol. Gen. Kowit Wattana's tenure as National Police Chief. He assured that actions will align with legal and regulatory standards. If the act is deemed a violation under Section 157, a comprehensive investigation will follow. The Prime Minister also stressed the need for effective weapon search measures and checkpoint setups, acknowledging the challenges but underscoring the importance of police proficiency in ensuring public safety.
Regarding reports of the FBI's involvement in providing information leading to a search of the perpetrator's home in the Thepsirin School shooting in Nonthaburi, Pol. Gen. Kittirat indicated he has not received a report on this. He has tasked Pol. Gen. Thana Chuwong and Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitanilabutr, Deputy National Police Chiefs, with overseeing the case to prevent recurrence. He affirmed the capabilities of the Thai police in handling such matters.
