Bangkok: Prime Minister Sihasak Sihasak has expressed concerns over Cambodia's dramatic portrayal of "Chinese tanks" in the media, highlighting that such sensationalism could hinder Thailand's diplomatic negotiations. He emphasized the necessity of direct dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia, while appreciating China's neutral stance and willingness to mediate.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkaew, addressed the readiness of China to facilitate discussions between Thailand and Cambodia. He noted the limited channels currently available for dialogue, which have been further strained by Cambodia's move towards a forced compromise process, bypassing bilateral negotiations. This approach, he argued, has closed doors to discussions on land borders, a situation made more complex given that Cambodia is not yet ready to engage in dialogue as previously agreed during the ASEAN Summit in Cebu.
Prime Minister Sihasak underscored the importance of China's role in maintaining neutrality, as discussed by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul with President Xi Jinping. He reiterated the Thai government's confidence in China's impartiality but expressed concern over the Cambodian media's favorable coverage of Chinese tanks, which he believes could destabilize the fragile ceasefire and the delicate Thai-Cambodian relations.
Additionally, Mr. Sihasak addressed issues related to illicit Chinese business activities in Thailand, particularly the fraudulent acquisition of Thai citizenship by Chinese infants. He stressed the importance of quality, sustainable, and lawful investment, acknowledging that while such illicit activities constitute a minority, they significantly impact Thai public sentiment. He urged China to take these concerns seriously to foster a positive investment environment.
