New york city: “Sihasak” met with the Secretary-General and President of the UN General Assembly, discussed with Japanese and Russian ministers, and explained the international situation on the Thai-Cambodian border. He joined the four-party discussion group “Thailand, the United States, Malaysia, and Cambodia” to push for a ceasefire agreement.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nikorndej Plankul, Director-General of the Department of Information and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced that Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkeow, Minister of Foreign Affairs, arrived in New York City on September 26 to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Ahead of the meeting, Mr. Sihasak engaged with high-ranking representatives of member states to address Thailand’s interests concerning the tensions between Thailand and Cambodia. He met with the Japanese Foreign Minister, who chairs the Conference of the Parties to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (Ottawa Convention), to reaffirm Thailand’s commitment to persuade Cambodia to cease Convention violations and resume joint mine clearance.
Mr. Nikorndej stated that Mr. Sihasak also met with the Russian Foreign Minister, aiming to reinforce Thailand’s commitment to peaceful actions and resolve tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. As Russia is set to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October 2025, both countries supported using bilateral mechanisms to address the border issues. Additionally, Mr. Sihasak met with Mr. Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ms. Annalena Berbock, President of the UN General Assembly, and Ms. Julie Bishop, Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, to emphasize Thailand’s adherence to the UN Charter and its peaceful approach.
Mr. Nikorndej further emphasized that the Minister of Foreign Affairs led a Thai delegation to a reception with the US-ASEAN Business Council and the US Chamber of Commerce. This event was an opportunity to introduce the new government and discuss investment opportunities and trade cooperation with the US, especially in light of geopolitical competition and economic challenges, including US tariffs.
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson highlighted that, following the special meeting in Putrajaya, Malaysia, in July 2025, which led to the Thailand-Cambodia ceasefire agreement, Mr. Sihasak participated in four-party talks on September 26 with the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, and Cambodia. These talks, proposed by the US President, aimed to ensure that the ceasefire and GBC agreements yield tangible results, marking a crucial step in building trust between Thailand and Cambodia.
