Bangkok: Sihasak Phuangketkaew, Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed satisfaction with the outcomes of the 9th Thai-Russian Joint Commission meeting.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting culminated in a joint statement issued by Thailand and Russia. The discussions were aimed at accelerating the initiation of negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the Eurasian Economic Union (Thailand-EAEU FTA) to bolster bilateral trade. Thai Prime Minister Srisaket Sor Rungvisai expressed hope for the successful completion of the FTA, while preparations are underway for Thailand to host the 10th Joint Commission meeting in Bangkok.
During a joint press conference held with Alexei Shekunkov, Russia's Minister of Development of the Far East and Arctic Region, Sihasak emphasized the vital role of the private sector in driving economic relations between the two nations. The meeting, which was a continuation of discussions held during the ASEAN-Russia Summit, focused on enhancing market access and facilitating trade in energy, fertilizers, and agricultural products.
Alexei Shekunkov highlighted the long-standing relationship between Thailand and Russia, noting that the countries will mark the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. He also mentioned the significant number of Russian tourists visiting Thailand.
The meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to jointly develop the economy of Russia's Far East region and planning reciprocal visits to future economic forums. Russia extended an invitation to Thailand for the 2026 Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostock and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum's 30th anniversary in 2027. A symbolic exchange of gifts took place, with Mr. Sihasak presenting Muay Thai boxing gloves and a Thai national football team jersey as a gesture of goodwill.
