Bangkok: "Siripong" is actively pursuing feedback on a proposed fare range for the BTS electric train system, aiming to set prices between 17 and 45 baht by 2027.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Siripong Angkasakulkiat, Deputy Minister of Transport, has been advancing the integrated electric train ticketing system initiative. The Ministry of Transport has submitted a proposal to the Cabinet to reduce the financial burden on the public through an integrated ticket, with fares ranging from 17 to 45 baht. This proposal is in the public consultation phase, gathering feedback from government agencies to refine the draft.
The draft primarily suggests a fare structure starting at 17 baht and capping at 45 baht as a one-time entry fee. Additionally, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) must transfer its debts and assets related to the currently unintegrated Green and Gold electric train lines to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) for unified management.
The Ministry of Finance is tasked with determining the provider for the back-end system. Although a new company was initially proposed to develop this system, it was decided that this would be unnecessary and financially burdensome. Feedback is needed from various agencies to understand their preferences and opinions on this matter.
Regarding the timeline, Mr. Siripong stated that the Ministry of Transport, along with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Minister of Transport Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, is targeting implementation by 2027. Negotiations with private companies concerning existing concession contracts will involve categorizing contracts into those expiring soon and those with longer durations, exploring options like issuing bonds or raising funds to mitigate any potential impact on public debt.
