State-Run Pawnshops Offer Interest-Free Loans to Support Farmers During Planting Season

Bangkok: State-run pawnshops are offering interest-free loans this month, providing significant relief to farmers during the critical planting season.

According to Thai News Agency, the government has instructed state-owned pawnshops nationwide to eliminate interest on loans for an entire month, with no restrictions on the loan amount, throughout July. This initiative aims to ease the high living costs faced by farmers during this period.

Lieutenant Colonel Patthadarasmi Thongsalooykorn, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the government's decision is a response to the financial challenges farmers encounter, especially when substantial funds are required for production. The Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), in collaboration with the Government Pawnshop Office, launched the "Standing by Farmers: Interest-Free" project. This scheme offers interest-free loans for up to one month, regardless of the loan amount, throughout July 2026, to enhance farmers' financial liquidity and stimulate the grassroots economy.

To simplify access to these loans, the government has streamlined the eligibility requirements, minimizing barriers for farmers. New customers need to present their original national ID card alongside their farmer ID card or farmer registration book to avail of the one-month interest-free loan. For existing customers already registered as farmers in the Government Pawnshop system, only an original national ID card is required for identity verification and benefit access.

Captain Patthadarasmi emphasized that the government aims to reduce financial burdens and increase liquidity for farmers nationwide, as they require working capital for essential production inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. Farmers can access this program at all government pawnshop branches across the country during official working hours, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, including lunchtime, to ensure maximum accessibility.
