Bangkok: "Supamas" led a team to raid a famous buffet restaurant to identify any hidden conditions or misleading advertisements that could result in consequences for the establishment. Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office and supervisor of the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB), carried out inspections in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Department of Medical Sciences, the Department of Internal Trade, and the Pathumwan District Office at CentralWorld shopping mall.
According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul had expressed concerns about the public's quality of life and cost of living, prompting ministers to address potential consumer exploitation. The high popularity and competitive nature of buffet restaurants necessitated government oversight to prevent hidden charges, undisclosed promotional terms, and substandard food quality.
Ms. Supamas emphasized the involvement of the FDA and the Department of Medical Sciences in testing buffet food items for contaminants, such as heavy metals and pathogens. Vegetables, in particular, will undergo rigorous testing for up to 250 different substances to ensure safety. The OCPB frequently receives complaints about excessively high pricing and undisclosed additional charges, often hidden in small print that customers might overlook.
Advertising discrepancies also pose significant issues, with food images in menus not matching the actual dishes served, and promotions not being honored upon restaurant visits due to stock shortages. Additionally, issues arise with online discount coupons that may not be valid during certain periods or on public holidays, leading to consumer dissatisfaction.
To protect consumers, Ms. Supamas advised thorough checks of buffet details, including pricing, terms, item availability, and special discounts. Consumers are encouraged to verify receipt details and dispute any mismatches with advertised items. The OCPB, along with relevant departments, will conduct nationwide inspections, issuing warnings and taking legal action against violators to ensure consumer protection.
