Khon kaen: "Supamas" orders the Consumer Protection Board in Khon Kaen to investigate "tissue dumplings".
According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Suphamas Isarabhakdi, Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office, has initiated an investigation into the "tissue dumpling" incident reported by a consumer in Khon Kaen province. The consumer claimed to have found tissue paper mixed with the filling of fish dumplings bought from a shop near Bueng Kaen Nakhon. This incident has drawn significant attention and criticism on social media. Ms. Suphamas has instructed officials, including Mr. Pradermchai Boonchuaylue, Dr. Patcharin Samsiripong, and Mr. Ronnarong Poolpipat, to closely monitor the investigation's progress.
Ms. Suphamas emphasized the importance of food safety and consumer rights protection, aligning with government measures advocated by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Following the report, a team was dispatched to investigate nearly 30 dumpling vendors in the Bueng Kaen Nakhon area. Despite thorough inspections, no evidence supporting the initial claims was found. The Consumer Protection Board (CPB) is actively attempting to contact the affected consumer for further evidence.
Food safety falls under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as per the Food Act B.E. 2522 (1979). Ms. Suphamas has directed the CPB to collaborate with the FDA to ensure thorough inspections. The CPB is prepared to assist consumers in filing complaints and seeking civil remedies if necessary. This initiative aims to uphold consumer rights and ensure swift compensation for any damages incurred.
Ms. Suphamas urged restaurant operators to uphold cleanliness and safety standards throughout the food production and distribution process. She encouraged consumers to be vigilant about the hygiene of establishments before making purchases. In case of discovering foreign objects in food, consumers should retain the food and packaging as evidence, document the incident with photos, and report it to the authorities promptly. The CPB is committed to supporting consumers in such situations.
Consumers can report unsanitary or unsafe food to the FDA hotline at 1556. For filing complaints regarding damages, they can contact the Consumer Protection Board hotline at 1166, use the OCPB Connect application, visit the ocpb website at ocpb.go.th, or reach out to the Damrongtham Center in their respective provinces.
