Bangkok: "Teng" Nattapong Ruangpanyawut has expressed confidence as the Bangkok gubernatorial election approaches its final stages, rallying citizens to cast their votes with hope. He emphasized the importance of selecting a leader who will drive change in the city, acknowledging the current poll results that show Mallika Boonmeetrakul Mahasuk overtaking him to second place. Drawing a parallel to the 2019 election, where he initially placed third but ultimately won, Nattapong remains optimistic about the outcome.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut, a list-based Member of Parliament from the People's Party and its leader, is confident in the capabilities of the entire People's Party team. This includes Mr. Chaiwat Sathavorawichit, the party's candidate, the executive committee, and the 50 Bangkok City Council candidates. With only a week left before the election on June 28th, he stressed the importance of voting for transformative change to improve the city.
Nattapong highlighted the serious challenges confronting Bangkok, beyond the often-discussed issues of uneven sidewalks, poor drainage, and insufficient streetlights. These challenges include the high cost of living and entrenched corruption involving city officials and bribery related to permits. He asserted that these problems require the support of local politics within the Bangkok City Council to be resolved. The City Council's power to oversee budget decisions transparently and pass progressive legislation is crucial for driving positive change in Bangkok. He argued that the People's Party presents a compelling option, with a capable management team led by Mr. Chaiwat, 50 district representatives, and the backing of 119 Members of Parliament to push for national-level laws.
Regarding the poll results showing Mallika Boonmeetrakul Mahasuk leading, Nattapong accepted the findings but remained optimistic, citing his own unexpected victory in 2019 despite lower poll rankings. He emphasized the importance of election day polls and the People's Party's duty to highlight the significance of this election to Bangkok residents, urging them to vote for a governor who will lead change and improve the city.
Nattapong confirmed that Professor Dr. Surapol Nitikraipoj will remain a strategic advisor if the People's Party wins the election. He mentioned the Policy Fest held recently, which showcased their vision for addressing economic issues and improving the Bangkok Metropolitan Council's performance. He also reiterated their 100-day policy agenda, which has been communicated to show the benefits for Bangkok residents. He urged the public to follow the work of all candidates and ensure they exercise their right to vote on June 28th with determination.
