Bangkok: Academics have expressed their support for Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s firm stance in defending national dignity during discussions with US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim regarding the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border dispute. They emphasize that Thailand has not violated any laws and urge the United States to maintain a neutral position.
According to Thai News Agency, Assistant Professor Wanwichit Boonprong, from the Faculty of Political Science at Rangsit University, praised the Prime Minister’s comprehensive 11-point explanation to the US leader. Prof. Wanwichit highlighted the importance of protecting Thailand’s national dignity and honor, warning that any softening of the stance could lead to significant pressure from the public, who expect their leadership to stand firm against perceived violations.
Prof. Wanwichit emphasized that Thailand possesses substantial evidence proving Cambodia’s initial violation of the declaration, which has fueled the tensions. He stressed the necessity for Thailand to maintain a strong stance to ensure that the facts are acknowledged by the international community, particularly urging the United States to remain impartial.
Furthermore, Prof. Wanwichit clarified that the Prime Minister’s decision to suspend the agreement was not made out of anger but as a means to demonstrate Thailand’s position to the world. He asserted that Thailand values peace but will not tolerate any form of bullying, a sentiment he believes is shared by the majority of the Thai population.
The decision to remain unconcerned about potential economic pressures from the United States, such as tariffs, was another point discussed. Prof. Wanwichit suggested that this approach is intended to enhance Thailand’s bargaining power and reaffirm the importance of national honor. He urged the government to prepare for any trade repercussions, underscoring the need for leaders to protect national interests and foster a correct understanding within the international community.
