Bangkok: The Thai national windsurfing team is gearing up for a series of high-profile competitions, starting with the World Windsurfing Championships in England and culminating in the Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. The team, which includes four athletes-William McMillan, Siriporn Kaewduangngam, Wachirawit Thon-up, and Chanatkarn Charoensuk-will represent Thailand in various IQ Foil categories at the 20th Asian Games, scheduled from September 19 to October 4, 2026.
According to Thai News Agency, the Windsurfing Association of Thailand has announced plans for a pre-competition training camp in Japan beginning on September 9, 2026. This initiative aims to help the athletes acclimate to the venue's unique wind and water conditions, as none of the team members have previously competed at this location.
William McMillan, a 20-year-old Thai-Australian, is set to compete in the World Windsurfing Championships from September 4-11, 2026, in England. This event is a crucial stepping stone, providing world ranking points in preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games. Upon completing the championships, McMillan will return to Thailand and then promptly join his team in Japan on September 14, 2026.
The competition at the Asian Games is expected to be fierce, with strong contenders from China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, and South Korea. Despite the tough competition, the Secretary-General of the Windsurfing Association of Thailand expressed optimism about the team's chances, noting that every athlete has the potential to secure a medal.
The 20th Asian Games will offer four gold medals in windsurfing, with events kicking off on September 26, 2026. In the previous edition held in Hangzhou, China, the Thai team achieved significant success, securing one gold, one silver, and one bronze medal in various windsurfing categories.
