Tianjin: The Thai women's volleyball team triumphed over South Korea in a decisive 3-0 set match, advancing to the semi-finals of the 2026 Asian Championship. They are set to compete against the winner of the match between Japan and Chinese Taipei on August 29.
According to Thai News Agency, the quarterfinal match of the AVC Women's Volleyball Continental Championship 2026 took place at the Tianjin Gymnasium in Tianjin, China. The Thai team, ranked 17th globally, had previously won all three of their group stage matches and faced the South Korean team, ranked 28th.
Head coach Kiattipong Ratchatagriengkrai's starting lineup featured players including Pornpun Guedparach, Chatchuon Moksri, Pimpichaya Kokram, Kaewkallaya Kamulthala, Sasipaporn Chantavisut, Thaddao Nuekjaeng, and Piyanut Paennoy as the libero. Thailand secured victory with scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-21, with Pimpichaya Kokram scoring the highest points at 19. This win secured their place in the semi-finals, where they will face either Japan or Chinese Taipei.
Head coach "Coach Ott" Kiatipong Ratchatagriangrai expressed that the victory was significant, marking the achievement of their first goal. He acknowledged the challenge of defeating South Korea. Sasipaporn Chantavisut, a key player, noted the difficulty in overcoming South Korea's strong defense but highlighted the team's collaborative effort.
The tournament champion will earn a spot in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, while the top three teams will qualify for the 2027 Volleyball World Championship.
