Bangkok: Thailand and Malaysia are making significant strides in addressing issues related to shrimp and sea bass exports, with sanitary inspections anticipated to conclude this week.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suriya Jungrungreangkit, the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, announced advancements regarding the export of Thai shrimp to Malaysia, which are pending the results of the sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) assessment. The Director-General of Malaysia's Fisheries Department confirmed that the shrimp assessment is complete, and the evaluation of white snapper is expected to wrap up this week. Following the completion of these assessments, both countries will convene to discuss the results, leading to an official statement from Malaysia.
Mr. Suriya highlighted the progress made since the agreement on July 1st between Thailand and Malaysia, which set a timeline for the resumption of trade. The two countries are currently in the process of verifying Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS). Thailand is awaiting the completion of Malaysia's inspection process, anticipated to conclude shortly.
Dato' Adnan Hussein, Director-General of the Malaysian Department of Fisheries, informed Malaysia-China Insight that joint assessments have been ongoing since July 28. While the shrimp assessment is complete, the evaluation of white snapper farms is scheduled to finish this Friday.
The request to export shrimp from Thailand to Malaysia has already completed the document verification process, and the assessment process is on track to be finalized this week. After the completion of the assessments, both parties will engage in further discussions to deliberate on the results before the Malaysian Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security makes an official announcement.
